“God On Our Side” written by Bob Dylan; performed by Astyages.

It’s been a long while since I posted anything… Phew! December! How tempus fugits! Anyway… Lately I’ve been spending most of my time over on FB… doing a lot of blogging there in protest at the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel’s IDF… This song is¬†my own personal rendition of an old favorite of mine from Bob Dylan, which expresses exactly how I feel about religion and war!

Enjoy! And please let me know what you think! ūüôā

More Music from Asty…

G’day readers!

I think I’m finally getting the hang of this ‘recording’ and ‘editing’ thing… I’ve just loaded up my latest effort on my Youtube channel; here’s a direct link to it:

The guitar still has a (deliberately) ‘grungey’ sound, which I think suits the mood of the song… but do let me know what you think…

All the best,

More Music from Astyages

I was telling the piglets¬†over at the Pigs’ Arms (¬† It’s the best virtual pub in e-space!) that I’d had some fun the other day playing my new Epiphone¬†Les Paul Special II through a tiny 3-watt Orange ‘Micro-Crush’ amplifier and said I’d post a few recordings I’d made. Unfortunately I appear to be having some difficulty with the file-sharing website I usually use and while I suspect it’s just a temporary glitch and have contacted 4-shared’s tech support for help, I thought that in the meantime I’d try to post some of them direct from my pc. If I can do that here, then maybe I can do it over there (although as a mere ‘contributor’ I don’t have as much control over what and/or how I post things over there as I do here; that’s why I’m trying it here first!)

Anyway, assuming this experiment works, I do hope you’ll enjoy the following songs:

(Sorry folks… I seem to be having some difficulty getting these links to work… but I’m trying hard to rectify the problem, so please do come back later; I’m sure I’ll have it fixed soon… – Asty)

(Hehehehe! Long story short: Got it sussed! Hope you all enjoy these!)

BTW, in case anyone is interested, I’m currently looking¬†for a bassist; if you’re a bassist, live within easy travelling distance of Paradise, SA, and/or play any other instrument (including vocals; looking for harmonists) and think you may be able to contribute to the ‘Burnside Refugees’ (who may be considering a name-change soon…) please contact me by leaving a comment on this thread. Also please take note that I installed a ‘band-page’ widget yesterday, and once I figure out how it works, I guess we’ll have a ‘Band Page’ for the ‘Reffoes’…

NB: Constructive criticism is welcome, as are all comments, but insulting comments from the ignorant will be ignored and removed.

POSTSCRIPT: If you’re having trouble accessing these files, it may be that you need to sign up for a 4-shared account in order to do so; in which case, I can recommend 4-shared as a file-sharing service; I’ve never had any trouble with them in the several years I’ve had an account there… so don’t be scared; these are good guys; go ahead and sign up! More of Asty’s Blues: Down to the Station

G’day, all!

Some of you may have notice that this week’s episode of ‘Bilitis’ is a little overdue; as is my next episode of ‘Virgil’s Aeneid’… I¬†do apologise and promise to post them both¬†within the next few days…

Some of you may also have noticed my conversation with Algae over at the Pigs’ Arms, in which I promised to post a new blues tune I’ve been working on… (Indeed, that’s what has been taking up most of my time lately… learnin’ the blues!)

As it turned out, I thought that a link to just a tune, with no visuals,¬†is a bit boring, so I had a search of youtube to see if I could find some appropriate movie footage to go along with it.. Here’s the result:¬†¬†(cue drum roll and fanfare of trumpets)

My dear readers, may I present for the first time ever, the premier viewing of Astyages’ new movie, “The Great Train Race – Down to the Station”, starring The Flying Scotsman, and featuring that other lovely old loco, the R761, as they duel it out for supremacy across the rugged plains of Outback Australia!

Enjoy! And PLEASE, leave comments!

More of Asty’s Music:

Filed under: More of Asty's Music — astyages @ 6:01 pm

G’day everyone! I thought it’s about time I uploaded some more of my music, so here are a few songs that I’ve been working on over the past few months. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do…

Casey Jones is one of my favorite songs from the Grateful Dead; Iko¬†Iko¬†is from the fabulous Dr John; Lean On Me is a favorite from the incomparable Bill Withers; Monday Monday¬†is my version of a very famous Mamas¬†and Papas song; whilst Ruby’s Arms is my version of an old Tom Waits ballad; and Simple Game, is of course, one of my favorite Moody Blues numbers… I hope you will all enjoy them.

How to Sing the Blues

Filed under: How to Sing the Blues — astyages @ 8:39 pm
Tags: , ,

Well, blogonauts¬†and piglets, today I have a special treat for you: some serious musical instruction on ‘How to¬†Sing the Blues’,¬†from Griff, my guitar instructor over at the Blues Guitar Unleashed website.

Gibson SG Standard (Heritage Cherry)

Griff says:

This is old, been passed around for years… but for some folks it’s new and it’s funny as all get out (that’s the Missourian in me coming out. Sorry, I was born there.)

by Lame Mango Washington
(attributed to Memphis Earlene Gray with help from Uncle Plunky, revisions by Little Blind Patti D. and Dr. Stevie Franklin)

1. Most Blues begin, “Woke up this morning.”

2. “I got a good woman” is a bad way to begin the Blues, ‘less you stick something nasty in the next line, like ” I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town.”

3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then find something that rhymes … sort of: “Got a good woman – with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher – and she weigh 500 pound.”

4. The Blues are not about choice. You stuck in a ditch, you stuck in a ditch; ain’t no way out.

5. Blues cars: Chevys¬†and Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues don’t travel in Volvos, BMWs, or Sport Utility Vehicles. Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. Jet aircraft an’ state-sponsored motor pools ain’t even in the running. Walkin’ plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin’ to die.

6. Teenagers can’t sing the Blues. They ain’t fixin’ to die yet. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues, ” adulthood” means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

7. Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or any place in Canada. Hard times in St. Paul or Tucson is just depression. Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City still the best places to have the Blues. You cannot have the blues in any place that don’t get rain.

8. A man with male pattern baldness ain’t the blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg cuz you skiing is not the blues. Breaking your leg cuz an alligator be chomping on it is.

9. You can’t have no Blues in an office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong. Go outside to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.

10. Good places for the Blues:

a. highway
b. jailhouse
c. empty bed
d. bottom of a whiskey glass

Bad places:

a. Ashrams
b. gallery openings
c. Ivy League institutions
d. golf courses

11. No one will believe it’s the Blues if you wear a suit, ‘less you happen to be an old ethnic person, and you slept in it.

12. Do you have the right to sing the Blues? Yes, if:

a. you’re older than dirt
b. you’re blind
c. you shot a man in Memphis
d. you can’t be satisfied

No, if:

a. you have all your teeth
b. you were once blind but now can see
c. the man in Memphis lived.
d. you have a retirement plan or trust fund.

13. Blues is not a matter of color. It’s a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Gary Coleman could. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues.

14. If you ask for water and Baby give you gasoline, it’s the Blues.

Other acceptable Blues beverages are:

a. wine
b. whiskey or bourbon
c. muddy water
d. black coffee

The following are NOT Blues beverages:

a. mixed drinks
b. kosher wine
c. Snapple
d. sparkling water

15. If it occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it’s a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse, and dying lonely on a broken down cot. You can’t have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or getting liposuction.

16. Some Blues names for women:

a. Sadie
b. Big Mama
c. Bessie
d. Fat River Dumpling

17. Some Blues names for men:

a. Joe
b. Willie
c. Little Willie
d. Big Willie

18. Persons with names like Sierra, Sequoia, Auburn, and Rainbow can’t sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.

19. Make your own Blues name (starter kit):

a. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.)
b. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi, etc.)
c. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.)

For example, Blind Lime Jefferson, or Cripple Kiwi Fillmore, etc.

(Well, maybe not “Kiwi.”)

20. I don’t care how tragic your life: you own a computer, you cannot sing the blues. You best destroy it. Fire, a spilled bottle of Mad Dog, or get out a shotgun. I don’t care.

The Lergie and the Fruits of my Labours

Filed under: The Dreaded Lergie and the Fruits of my Labours: — astyages @ 7:29 pm

G’day everyone! I thought I’d better post this update to my ‘about’ page in case anyone was beginning to think I’d dropped off the face of the planet or something…

The foot situation is not only not improving; now I’m getting cramps from holding my left foot off the floor for the past fifteen months straight! On top of that I had an ‘Upper¬†respiratory¬†Tract Infection’ which my doctor tells me could well have been whooping cough… “There’s a lot of it about…” Left me feeling weak as a kitten with all its muscles shredded… then, just as I’m getting back to what passes for normal these days I start to get these cramps in my lower hamstring, calves and foot… not to mention my lower back… incredibly painful.

The dreaded lergie¬†put paid to my posting anything much on the 4-shared site or the Beginners’ Blues Guitar/Blues Guitar Unleashed forum lately, due to a complete absence of energy; so during this past week I’ve gee’ed myself up to posting three new blues tunes by Sunday midnight. I’ve decided I’ve already produced a good enough example of each tune to post tomorrow; I¬†hope so, anyway, ’cause there’s no time to produce any more!

For Asty’s Weblog’s regular readers, however, I apologise for the long delay between posts; now you know why…

There is also another episode of Virgil’s Aeneid due to be posted here which will possibly make the same Sunday midnight deadline, or maybe sometime on¬†Monday… I’m also about to post the last, bumper edition of ‘Cyrus’ over at the ‘Pigs Arms’ in the next¬†coupla¬†days too, so I’m gonna be a busy bloke for¬†a while. I’ll post links to my new blues tunes as soon as I post them in 4-shared; then anyone interested in my progress as a ‘bluesman’ will be able to check it out for themselves…

Now, gotta get back to it… Later dudes and dudettes!

Okay back again! Here are those links:

Hope you enjoy these. Let me know¬†what you think, won’t you? Now I’ve posted them on my OWN blog, I think I’d better get across to ‘Beginners’ Blues Guitar and put them up there!

Later, people!

Payin’ My Dooz and Learnin’ the Blooz…

Me jamming at Hung One On's place; using his Statocaster 'cause I can't carry my SG!

G’day everyone!¬†¬†

As the next episode of the ‘Aeneid’ is slightly overdue (not that I have a set schedule, mind you, but it does seem a little late to me!), I thought I’d just post a short note to let you all know why it’s late, and what I’ve been up to lately.¬†¬†

As I think I mentioned over at the Pigs Arms, I sent away for a Beginners Blues Guitar course about a fortnight ago and it arrived last week; since then I’ve been busy ‘payin’ my dooz, and learning the blooz’… Now the course also has a forum and you don’t have to buy the course to sign up for a few free lessons; one of the things they do to keep us ‘beginners’ motivated is to allow us to put up recordings of our efforts using, so we can get some (hopefully constructive) criticism and/or encouragement…¬†¬†

Here are the links; hope you enjoy them both:

If the hypertext doesn’t work, try copying and pasting them into your browser…¬†¬†

More to come!
