Burning Boats

Filed under: Uncategorized — astyages @ 5:59 pm

I’m sitting here now amidst the smell of burning boats…

Today the ‘cooling off’ period is officially over; so I’ve engaged a conveyancer and a removalist and, most nerve-wracking of all, posted off my notice to terminate my current lifetime (LIFETIME, Dave, you stupid prick!) tenancy with Housing SA and heading off to the relative insecurity of home ownership…

But they say there’s someplace up ahead called ‘El Dorado’, or some call it ‘Shangri Lah’… Or ‘Nirvana’ or some-such… So I’ve burned my boat on the shore and am heading inland… Egads! The jungle’s dense though! So much foliage to hack one’s way through (read ‘paperwork’!)… I begin to wonder if I’ll ever make it… with the Precious ‘n’ all… I can see the foothills of Mount Doom now… just up ahead… Oh well, here goes nothing! Just one leap into the void… now tell yourself Dave, “There IS a bridge there! There IS a bridge there!” Now, Dave, JUMP!

If I get the place fixed up properly now, with a bit of luck, it should be twenty years before it needs major work again; time enough to see me out, I think; but I’m gonna start saving the pennies anyway… just in case!

  1. Apologies for not coming back. The puter is all consuming these days.

Buying a house? Wow that’s fantastic. That’s a turn around since your ‘days of misery’. Your leg and stuff.

I wish you luck with it. However I feel sorry for the neighbours when you crank up the amp πŸ˜‰

Any luck with your book? I know that you talked about publishing it. It was a bit too edumacated for poor old me.

Hey, I thought of you the other day. There was a program on SBS about alone of the original council estates in London. Arnold something. Anyway, they interviewed a guy called Steve, who was instrumental in helping squatters.

There were some old black & white TV shots. I am sure that I saw you waving πŸ™‚

I don’t see you at The PA?—-or The Drum. mind you the Drum ios just a boxing match now, on 90% of topics.

    C Ya.

    • Hi again Carisbroke; no need to apologize; I only just got the internet up and running this arvo anyway! As you say, it’s a step up from the ‘days of misery’, though in fact it is the result of those same ‘days’, which are what ‘earned’ me the dough for the house. I’d have stayed in my lifetime residency with Housing SA, though if it hadn’t been for the depredations of Centrelink, which was set to gradually erode the size of my ‘lump-sum’ by ‘deeming’ that it was earning more interest than it actually was, and decucting the ‘deemed’ amount from my pension… Now I have no more money in the bank; it’s not earning interest and so they have to put me back on the full pension… and if I need any large sums of cash down the track (say for another operation, or a mobility scooter/wheelchair etc) I can always use the house as collateral for a small loan. I hope you’ll come and visit me if ever you find yourself in SA… I have a couple of spare rooms. Yeah… I got a bit bored with all the in-fighting at the PA… though it’s nice to see that some of the old regulars are returning… I thought my staying away might entice Ato and Voice to return and it seems I was right. In any case I think they were rather bored with me; the completely disinterested reception I got for what was, I thought, a couple of my best pieces of irony kinda ‘de-inspired’ me for writing for the PA too… for a while anyway. As for the Dumb… it just gets less and less relevant and there seems to be less and less point in posting anything there at all… I doubt anyone reads it other than those who post there anyway! Maybe I’ll drop by the PA for a trotters ale in the near future, just to test the climate-change… Anyway, you’re always welcome here! Cya later,

    • G’day Julian! Nice to see you here… I’ve been in the throes of looking for, and buying, a house… as well as organizing repairs to same along with the installation of solar electrickery! I’m currently half-packed and have even started moving in already, although the actual big ‘move’ doesn’t happen ’til Friday…

How about you? What have you been up to?
